MANTI — Originally produced in the 1950s, “The Curious Savage” is a play about some rich stepchildren from New England who commit their mother to live in an institution in order to prevent her from writing them out of her will.
Mrs. Savage married her husband, who had three children, when she was only 16, and the children never accepted her as their mother. Years later, when their father dies, the siblings are concerned that through the memorial fund Mrs. Savage has created, she’s spending all their inheritance. She uses the fund to do things she’s always wanted to do but couldn’t do before her husband’s death, such as produce and star in plays.
She also converts $10 million into negotiable bonds and hides them where the adult children can never find them. She also sends the three on wild goose chases to find the money.
The stepchildren are all corrupt and have already spent their inheritance money. The daughter has been married six times. One son buys a senate seat, and the other son buys a judge’s seat.
The Manti High School Drama Department will put on “The Curious Savage” Sept. 11, 12 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. The play was cast last May, and the students spent the summer learning their lines. Rehearsals started at the beginning of the school year.
“We are trying something new,” said Forrest Eastman, drama teacher at Manti High.
The public is welcome to attend all three showings. Tickets for children and seniors are $3, and tickets for students and adults are $5.
